Lyrics
Intro - Deep male spoken, Rhodes, distant trumpet
Exodus nineteen... A mountain they couldn't touch. Hebrews twelve... A heavenly city they're invited into. Same holy God. A greater Mediator.
Verse 1 - Male, deep rhythmic storytelling, restrained drums
Exodus nineteen, the third day came, Mount Sinai trembled as the Lord descended in flame. Thunder in the heavens, smoke upon the hill, The trumpet growing louder, every heart was standing still. Boundaries on the mountain, none could cross the line, Even Moses stood in trembling before the great Divine. The people heard His voice and begged to hear no more, Overwhelmed by holy presence unlike anything before.
Male transitions into smooth melodic singing
Now Hebrews twelve reminds us of that mountain long ago, Where the God of all creation let His holiness be known. But keep reading, there's a wonder that the writer wants revealed, Another mountain, and a covenant that's sealed.
Chorus - Female soulful lead, full groove and lively trombones
What cannot be shaken, cannot be moved, There's a kingdom everlasting, standing on Your truth. From the fire to the city, Jesus made the way, Now we come with grateful hearts, in reverence and praise. Oh, let the mountains tremble, Let the heavens hear His name. What cannot be shaken Will forever remain.
Verse 2 - Male, melodic boom-bap delivery, warm horn responses
But you have come to Zion, the city of the King, The heavenly Jerusalem where countless angels sing. An assembly of the firstborn, whose names are written there, And the righteous brought to fullness in the presence of His care. Remember Genesis four, when Abel's blood was shed, It cried from out the ground, where an innocent man lay dead. But Hebrews speaks of Jesus, whose blood has greater worth, A better word than Abel's cry, forgiveness for the earth.
Male - Soulful melodic lift
At Sinai Moses sprinkled blood, the covenant was made, But Jesus brought a better one through the sacrifice He paid. The God who spoke in thunder still invites us to draw near, Through the blood of our Redeemer, with a holy kind of fear.
Chorus - Female lead, layered gospel harmonies
What cannot be shaken, cannot be moved, There's a kingdom everlasting, standing on Your truth. From the fire to the city, Jesus made the way, Now we come with grateful hearts, in reverence and praise. Oh, let the mountains tremble, Let the heavens hear His name. What cannot be shaken Will forever remain.
Verse 3 - Male, confident singing, grooving bass and brass
Now turn to Haggai two, many centuries before, God promised He would shake the heavens and the earth once more. Hebrews twelve repeats it, explaining what it means, What is temporary passes, what is lasting will remain. So listen to the One who speaks, don't turn your heart away, The God who shook Mount Sinai still is speaking to this day. Deuteronomy called Him fire, consuming in His might, His holiness remains the same, His judgments always right.
Male - Fully melodic, emotional but restrained
We're receiving an unshaken kingdom, not a world without its pain, But a promise that outlasts the things that never could remain. So let our lives be worship, with thanksgiving and with awe, For the God who welcomes us is still the holy God of all.
Bridge - Female spoken-sung, drums drop, Rhodes and gentle trombone
The mountain wasn't less holy... The Judge was still the same. But Jesus became our Mediator, And through Him, we draw near.
Male - Sung response
His kingdom will remain...
Female - Sung response
When everything else fades...
Instrumental - 4 bars, funky trombone riff and walking bass
Final Chorus - Female lead, male harmonies, full gospel brass
What cannot be shaken, cannot be moved, There's a kingdom everlasting, standing on Your truth. From the fire to the city, Jesus made the way, Now we come with grateful hearts, in reverence and praise.
Male and female - Melodic duet
Oh, let the mountains tremble, Let the heavens hear His name. What cannot be shaken Will forever remain.
Outro - Male melodic singing, gentle piano
Male
From Sinai to Zion... From trembling to praise...
Female
A kingdom everlasting...
Both
His glory never fades.
Male spoken
Exodus nineteen. Genesis four. Haggai chapter two. Deuteronomy four. Hebrews twelve, eighteen through twenty-nine. The kingdom cannot be shaken.
Reading the connection
Exodus 19:16-19 describes Sinai's trembling at the LORD's descent. Haggai 2:6-7 addresses the post-exilic community rebuilding the temple and promises a future shaking.
Hebrews 12:26 quotes Haggai and develops the contrast between what can be shaken and God's enduring kingdom. The chapter's Christian application is not the entirety of Haggai's original temple-era setting.
Passage notes
Direct quotation
Hebrews quotes Haggai’s shaking promise, originally spoken to temple rebuilders. Compare Sinai in Exodus 19, covenant blood in Exodus 24:8, Abel in Genesis 4:10 and consuming fire in Deuteronomy 4:24.
Discussion questions
- What hope did Haggai 2 offer the temple-building community?
- How does Hebrews 12:22-24 contrast Zion with Sinai?
- How does receiving the kingdom lead to gratitude and reverence rather than freedom from every hardship?
