Lyrics
Intro - Deep male spoken, gentle Rhodes and soft trombone
Ezekiel thirty-four... God made a promise to His scattered people. He said He would come looking for His sheep. Then centuries later... Jesus said, "I am the Good Shepherd."
Verse 1 - Male, intimate rhythmic storytelling
Ezekiel thirty-four, a nation scattered far, Their shepherds fed themselves while the people bore the scars. They never bound the wounded, never searched the ones astray, So God declared He'd seek the sheep those leaders turned away. "I Myself will search for them," the Lord began to say, "I'll gather all the scattered, bring the lost ones home someday." He'd strengthen those who suffered, give the weary somewhere safe, No longer left abandoned, forgotten or displaced. Then God spoke of one shepherd, His servant David's name, A future king to lead them, not like those who brought them pain.
Male - Soulful melodic lift
A promise spoken through the years, To those who thought they'd been forgotten. The Lord Himself would seek His sheep, And bring them safely home.
Chorus - Female soulful lead, full beat and warm trombones
He came Himself, He came for the lost, Through the darkness, through the cost. When others ran, He chose to stay, The Shepherd gave His life to save. He knows my name, He hears my cry, His love reached farther than the night. From ancient promise to Calvary, The Shepherd came for sheep like me.
Verse 2 - Male, grooving rhythmic delivery
Now Luke fifteen, the sinners gathered near, But the religious leaders questioned why He welcomed them here. So Jesus told a story of a shepherd and his flock, A hundred sheep together, till he noticed one was lost. He went to find that wanderer, and when the sheep was found, He lifted it upon his shoulders, joy was all around. He spoke of heaven's celebration when a sinner turns from sin, The heart of God rejoices when the wandering come to Him. Now John chapter ten, He makes the meaning plain, "I'm the Good Shepherd," and He'd give His life away. Not a hired hand who runs when danger comes in sight, He willingly would lay His life down to give His people life.
Chorus - Female, rich harmonies and brass
He came Himself, He came for the lost, Through the darkness, through the cost. When others ran, He chose to stay, The Shepherd gave His life to save. He knows my name, He hears my cry, His love reached farther than the night. From ancient promise to Calvary, The Shepherd came for sheep like me.
Verse 3 - Male, melodic soulful conviction
Now remember David's psalm, the Lord my Shepherd leads, Beside the quiet waters, He provides for all my needs. Then Jesus speaks of other sheep beyond that ancient fold, One flock beneath one Shepherd, bringing others to His home. He says His sheep will hear His voice, and those who hear will follow, He gives eternal life, a hope beyond tomorrow. No one can snatch them from His hand, His promises remain, The Shepherd who laid down His life would take it up again. First Peter chapter two says we wandered far astray, But now have turned to Christ, the Shepherd who has made a way.
Male - Fully melodic, tender
So if you're tired of wandering, And your heart is far from home, There's a Shepherd calling you to Him, You don't have to walk alone.
Bridge - Female spoken-sung, piano only
I used to hear a story... About a sheep that lost its way. About a shepherd who went searching... And wouldn't leave it there.
Male - Soft melodic
Then I opened up the Scriptures...
Female - Emotional melodic response
And realized that sheep was me.
Instrumental - 4 bars, soulful trombone, deep bass
Final Chorus - Male and female duet, uplifting brass and gospel harmonies
He came Himself, He came for the lost, Through the darkness, through the cost. When others ran, He chose to stay, The Shepherd gave His life to save. He knows my name, He hears my cry, His love reached farther than the night. From ancient promise to Calvary, The Shepherd came for sheep like me.
Outro - Deep male spoken, soft Rhodes
Ezekiel thirty-four. Psalm twenty-three. Luke fifteen. John chapter ten. First Peter chapter two. The God who promised to seek the lost Revealed His Good Shepherd in Jesus.
Reading the connection
Ezekiel 34 condemns Israel's failed shepherds and promises the LORD's own care (34:11-16), alongside a promised Davidic shepherd (34:23-24).
John 10:11-16 identifies Jesus as the good shepherd who lays down His life. Luke 15:3-7 depicts searching for a lost sheep. Christians connect this with Ezekiel's hope; these are resonances, not direct quotations of Ezekiel.
Passage notes
Thematic echo
Ezekiel promises God’s care and a Davidic shepherd in Israel’s restoration setting. John’s Good Shepherd language develops the motif without a formal quotation. Compare Psalm 23, Luke 15:3-7 and 1 Peter 2:25.
Discussion questions
- How do Ezekiel’s failed shepherds contrast with God’s promised care?
- How does Jesus’ willingness to lay down His life contrast with the hired hand?
- How does Luke 15:7 shape your welcome of someone returning to God?
