Lyrics
Intro - Deep male spoken-sung, Rhodes, funky bass
Exodus sixteen... Bread falling from heaven. Now fast-forward to John chapter six... Same conversation. A revelation centuries in the making.
Verse 1 - Male, smooth rhythmic storytelling
Out in the wilderness, the people had a need, Israel was hungry, with a nation left to feed. They complained against the Lord, remembered Egypt's bread, But God had something greater than the words their hunger said. Morning came, the ground was covered, something strange was lying there, "What is it?" they asked Moses, seeing bread beyond compare. Gather what you need today, tomorrow trust again, Every morning brought a lesson in depending upon Him. Deuteronomy eight would tell them what the lesson meant, Not by bread alone we live, but by the words that God has sent.
Male - Melodic singing, horns answering
It wasn't just the bread He gave, It was the trust He came to teach. He fed their bodies in the desert, While their hearts were learning to believe.
Chorus - Female soulful lead, full groove, dancing trombones
More than manna, more than bread, More than just the words we've read. He fed them then, He feeds us still, But there's a hunger only Christ can fill. Bread from heaven, life for my soul, What Moses saw, Christ came to show. From the wilderness to John chapter six, Jesus is the Bread of Life!
Verse 2 - Male, rhythmic singing, crisp drums and brass
Psalm seventy-eight remembers how the heavens opened wide, Bread of angels filled their tables, God Himself had supplied. Now Jesus feeds five thousand, with a few small loaves to share, And the crowds begin to follow, looking for another meal there. They ask about the manna, what sign will He provide? Their fathers ate from heaven, could He do the same this time? But Jesus turns the question, makes a truth they hadn't seen, "It wasn't Moses giving bread; My Father gives the real thing."
Male - Soulful melodic lift
Then He says, "I am the Bread of Life," And suddenly the picture grows. The miracle they knew from Moses Was pointing to a gift much more.
Chorus - Female, bright horns and gospel harmonies
More than manna, more than bread, More than just the words we've read. He fed them then, He feeds us still, But there's a hunger only Christ can fill. Bread from heaven, life for my soul, What Moses saw, Christ came to show. From the wilderness to John chapter six, Jesus is the Bread of Life!
Verse 3 - Male, warm melodic flow, deep bass pocket
John six, forty-nine, hear the difference Jesus made, Their fathers ate the manna, but their lives would one day fade. That bread sustained their bodies, but it couldn't conquer death, Now the living Bread from heaven offers everlasting rest. And Jesus says the bread He gives is His flesh for the world's life, A promise pointing forward to His coming sacrifice. The desert showed provision, but the Gospel shows the Son, What was temporary nourishment reveals the Holy One.
Male - Fully melodic, reflective
So don't just seek the blessings, And overlook the One who gives. The greatest gift was never manna, But the Savior through whom we live.
Bridge - Female spoken-sung, Rhodes and soft trombone
They were looking for another meal... He was offering eternal life. They remembered bread from heaven... But the Bread of Life stood before their eyes.
Instrumental - 4 bars, funky trombone solo, walking bass
Final Chorus - Female lead, male harmonies, full gospel brass
More than manna, more than bread, More than just the words we've read. He fed them then, He feeds us still, But there's a hunger only Christ can fill. Bread from heaven, life for my soul, What Moses saw, Christ came to show. From the wilderness to John chapter six, Jesus is the Bread of Life!
Outro - Male smooth melodic singing, female harmony

The bread was never the whole story...
Female
There was something more to see...
Both
From the wilderness to Jesus, God was showing what we need.
Male spoken
Exodus sixteen. Deuteronomy eight. Psalm seventy-eight. John chapter six. Read the connection.
Reading the connection
Exodus 16 describes manna gathered daily, with a double portion before the Sabbath. John 6:31 also draws on Israel's scriptural tradition, including Psalm 78:24.
In John 6:32-35 and 48-51 Jesus distinguishes the wilderness provision from Himself as the true bread of life. This is explicit interpretation of the manna imagery and a typological contrast, not identical kinds of nourishment.
Passage notes
Explicit NT interpretation
Jesus explicitly interprets the bread-from-heaven tradition; John 6:31 uses scriptural wording also found in Psalm 78:24. Manna was real provision, with Sabbath exceptions to daily gathering.
Discussion questions
- What do daily manna and Sabbath provision teach in Exodus 16?
- How does Jesus distinguish manna from the living bread in John 6:49-51?
- How can seeking gifts distract from trusting the giver?
