Lyrics
Intro - Deep male spoken, distant organ, warm Rhodes
A name spoken from a burning bush... A declaration through Isaiah... And centuries later, Jesus said something that made them reach for stones. Listen closely.
Verse 1 - Male, deep rhythmic storytelling
Exodus three, a shepherd saw a bush alive with flame, But the fire couldn't consume it, then a voice called out his name. "Moses, take your sandals off, you're standing on holy ground," The God of Abraham was speaking, and His glory was around. "I have seen My people's suffering, I have heard their desperate cries," He would lead them out of bondage, bring deliverance to their lives. Moses asked, "Who sent me, Lord? What name am I to say?" And the answer from the fire still resounds until today. "I AM WHO I AM," the Lord declared His name, Not a god that man created, not a power that would fade.
Male - Soulful melodic lift
Before the kingdoms rose and fell, Before the generations came, The One who heard His people's cries Would always be the same.
Chorus - Female soulful lead, full groove, rising trombones
Before Abraham, I AM, Before the dust, before the land. The Word who was with God above Came near to us in saving love. Oh, the wonder of His name, The ancient words still speak today. Not just a teacher, not just a man, Hear what He said: Before Abraham, I AM.
Verse 2 - Male, confident rhythmic singing, horn responses
Isaiah forty-three, now hear the Lord proclaim, "Before Me no god was formed," and none will come again. "I am He," the Lord declares, "besides Me none can save," A truth preserved through centuries, long before the Savior came. Now John eight, within the temple, Jesus speaks of Abraham, They question how He knows him, trying hard to understand. "You're not yet fifty years of age, how could you have seen that man?" But Jesus gives an answer they were never ready to withstand. "Before Abraham was, I AM," He said before their eyes, They lifted stones against Him, hearing more than age implied.
Male - Melodic, emotionally building
He didn't simply say, "I was," He spoke the words, "I AM." And suddenly the question rose: Who is this standing here with man?
Chorus - Female lead, rich harmonies, bright brass
Before Abraham, I AM, Before the dust, before the land. The Word who was with God above Came near to us in saving love. Oh, the wonder of His name, The ancient words still speak today. Not just a teacher, not just a man, Hear what He said: Before Abraham, I AM.
Verse 3 - Male, smooth soulful delivery, deep bass pocket
Now John chapter one takes us before creation's light, The Word was there with God, and the Word was God divine. Through Him all things were created, then He entered human life, The eternal Word took flesh and walked among us for a time. And John twenty shows us Thomas, standing with the risen Lord, Seeing Jesus there before him, speaking words he couldn't hold: "My Lord and my God!" he cried, as understanding came, The One who conquered death was standing there before his face. John tells us why these words were written, why the witness still remains: That we might believe God's Son is Christ and find life within His name.
Male - Fully melodic, intimate conviction
Not just a name from ancient pages, Not just a story from the past. The Savior who was there before creation Offers life that ever lasts.
Bridge - Female spoken-sung, piano and soft organ
The bush was burning... But it wasn't consumed. The prophets testified... And the Word became flesh.
Male - Soft melodic response
The great I AM...
Female - Rising soulful melody
The Son of God...
Both - Harmonized
Our Lord and Savior, Who conquered the grave.
Instrumental - 4 bars, warm trombone melody, grooving bass
Final Chorus - Female lead, male harmonies, triumphant brass
Before Abraham, I AM, Before the dust, before the land. The Word who was with God above Came near to us in saving love. Oh, the wonder of His name, The ancient words still speak today. The Son of God, the risen Lamb, My Lord, my Savior, the great I AM.

Reading the connection
Exodus 3:13-15 describes God's self-revelation to Moses. Isaiah 43:10-13 stresses the LORD's unique identity and saving sovereignty.
John 8:56-59 is commonly read by Christians as a claim to divine identity. Its 'I am' evokes divine self-revelation, particularly Isaiah's language, but is not an identical Hebrew/Greek phrase or a formal quotation of Exodus 3:14.
Passage notes
Thematic echo
The divine-identity connection is exegetical, not identical Hebrew and Greek wording or a formal quotation. Isaiah’s I am He language is especially relevant. John 1:1-14 and 20:28-31 provide explicit testimony to Jesus’ identity.
Discussion questions
- What does Exodus 3 reveal about God’s identity and concern for His people?
- How do Isaiah 43 and John 8 contribute to the Christian reading of Jesus’ claim?
- How do John 1:1-14 and Thomas’s confession in John 20:28 shape belief and life?
